W. P. Taylor Home

During the Battle of Augusta, two dramatic events took place at this site.  A wounded Confederate named Samuel Morgan  (a cousin of John Hunt Morgan) was taken here and cared for by Mrs. Mary Taylor. She is said to have torn up her finest linens to make bandages to care for Morgan, who later died.

Meanwhile next door, Dr. William Taylor, Mary and Walter’s son, fought with the Bracken County Militia and was burned alive when rebels set fire to the home.  The original house and an adjacent property were both destroyed by the fire.       The current building was constructed after the war.
